Digital Rite of Passage

Digital Rite of Passage

Digital Rite of Passage is a free framework for parents of children aged 6 to 16. It treats your child's first steps into digital life as a rite of passage: more freedom, step by step, in return for ongoing conversation. It is built on six conversations, each starting from a real situation and one question: "What do you do?"

Why Rite of Passage

Children do not become ready for the internet on a single birthday. They grow into it. A rite of passage gives that growth a shape. Access comes gradually, and each step is earned through talking, listening and trust on both sides. Your child learns to handle what they meet online. You learn what their digital life is really like.

Who it is for

Parents

A clear way to talk with your child about life online, from their first device to their first phone and beyond. Each conversation gives you situations to talk through together and helps you agree on rules you both understand.

People who work with parents and children

A shared language for talking with families about digital life. Teachers, school staff, psychologists, social workers and child protection practitioners can use the framework with the parents and children they support.

The six conversations

The framework is organised around six conversations. Each one covers a part of digital life your child will meet. Each starts from situations that end with "What do you do?", and each leads to rules you agree together.

Cyberbullying

How your child is treated online, and how they treat others, in chats, games and social media.

Fraud

Scams, fake offers and people who are not who they say they are.

Misinformation

How to tell what is true online, and what to do with what is not.

Influence

Who is trying to shape what your child wants, buys and believes.

Addiction

Apps and games built to keep your child coming back, and how to keep time online in balance.

AI

Chatbots and generated pictures, voices and videos, and what they mean for trust.
